Senior Anastasia Snodgrass, juniors Brooke O'Brien and Georgia Jeanneret, and sophomore Brynn Garcia, members of reigning California Division 4 state champion JSerra High, join DyeStat editor Erik Boal to discuss competing Sept. 16 in the girls sweepstakes race at the Woodbridge Cross Country Classic Presented by ASICS at 9:34 p.m. PDT at nearby Great Park in Irvine. JSerra finished eighth in last year's sweepstakes competition, edging fellow Orange County program Anaheim Canyon on a sixth-runner tiebreaker after the teams raced to a 331-331 result at SilverLakes Sports Complex. The fastest performance by any Orange County girls team in meet history is 87:27 by Capistrano Valley in 2014 at Great Park. Capistrano Valley is also the last Orange County girls program to place in the top three in the sweepstakes race, securing runner-up in 2013 at Estancia High. JSerra ran 88:58 last year at SilverLakes Sports Complex and is also pursuing the all-time mark by a Division 4 program set by Sage Creek, which clocked 87:59 in 2019 at SilverLakes Sports Complex. The Lions are part of a sweepstakes field that includes 10 teams that competed in the gold race in December at the Garmin RunningLane Championships in Alabama, including reigning California Division 1 state champion Buchanan, which finished second. The group expresses gratitude to coach Chase Frazier for their preparation, along with their motivation to develop into an elite national cross country program after earning several All-America track honors the past two years at Nike Outdoor Nationals at Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore. They also examine the additions of freshmen Summer Wilson and Kaylah Tasser to their lineup, and the importance of remaining a cohesive group in training and during races. They analyze the opportunities to be ambassadors for the school, along with role models for other student-athletes, and how JSerra has allowed each of them to grow academically, athletically and spiritually. The quartet emphasizes the importance of team culture and trust and accountability in achieving success collectively. The Lions also explain their motivation to not only repeat as section and state champions in November, but also their inspiration to become the first California Division 4 program to qualify to compete Dec. 3 at Nike Cross Nationals at Glendoveer Golf Course in Portland, Ore.
